How to format external drives using WD Quick Formatter in Windows or Mac Answer ID 3868 This answer explains how to use the WD Quick Formatter to format a WD external drive in Windows (8, 7, Vista, or XP) and Mac OSX (Leopard, Snow Leopard, Lion, Mt. Lion, or Mavericks).*END.
Recently I have purchased Titanfall2 and I realized that I do not have enough space on my console to download it. So, I decided to use an external hard drive to solve some of my storage issues.
The drive I'm using is a 1TB Usb 3.0 WD 'My Passport Ultra'. My playstation is currently running version 4.5.0.
Originally I plugged in the external hard drive just to see if it was compatible with the PS4. The playstation immediately recognized it and told me to reformat the drive.
I had some files on the drive, so I decided to unplug it and reformat it using Disk Utility on my mac. Now, the Playstation refuses to recognize my plugged in drive. I have tried reformatting it to ExFat, Fat, and even Mac-OS-Extended, but whenever I go to settings it just tells me that 'The USB storage device is not connected'. This is extremely frustrating because I cannot understand why the drive is not recognized. Any help is greatly appreciated! I just want to play Titanfall:(. Still not working!
Man this is driving me insane! Just a rollercoast of emotions. After a lot of trial and error (aka restarting my ps4 and plugging in my hd multiple times), my ps4 finally recognized that a USB device was plugged in. Upon plugging the device in I was given a message saying 'USB device's filesystem is unsupported'. I thought 'Great.
Its finally recognized, now hopefully I can reformat it using the PS4'. So went to Settings-Devices-Usb Storage and the device was there! Clicked reformat and everything looked like it was going great. Suddenly midway through the reformat I get an error message CE-37856-9 saying 'The connection to the USB storage device has been lost.' My device has stayed in the same position and I made sure not to touch the connection. I think the external hard drive is just constatnly cycling and the PS4 is unable to format it.
So currently we have two states: 1. USB Drive is unable to be recognized by the PS4 2. USB Drive is recognized by PS4, begins cycling. And PS4 is unable to write to it because of a 'disconnection' Wow I think I would have more fun sticking my finger in a blender. Alright final post. Apologies for the forum spam. So as my final attempt I tried reformatting my drive on my computer to FAT.
I understand that the PS4 needs to reformat regardless, but I thought maybe this would help with the recognition issues. Midway through the reformatting Disk Utitlity gave me an error and said the reformatting failed. I thought f.ck it, might as well try it in the PS4. Well what do you know, the PS4 recognized it instantly and was able to format it correctly.
Lesson learnt, PS4 likes failed formatting. I don't think I understood one thing throughout this entire process, but it finally worked. Hopefully this is a one off issue as I doubt anyone would be able to replicate my solution. Hi everyone, I used to have the same problem too, but please know that if you're external hard-drive can be read on your mac then it will definitely work on your ps4. The reason why it doesn't work is because you aren't erasing the whole content off your hard-drive.

If your hard drive still shows 72KB of usage then it's not totally erased and the PS4 won't read it. It has to be fully erased with ZERO in use.
The way I did it was by erasing the two parts of the hard drive and formatting it by (Exfat). Mine was in two parts (example: External Toshiba and then under it would have the title of how I previously renamed the harddrive when I first formatted it). You need to make sure that both parts (main part and sub part are both erased and formatted the same way). Connect it to your ps4 and it should be able to read it. Best of luck, ben. Same as jarynty.
Seagate Backup Plus 8TB. In the SettingsDevicesUSB Storage Devices sub menu I finally got the PS4 to recognize the external disk. Once selecting the external (named Backup+ Hub BK) I hit the options button on the controller and I could format the external to exFAT but once doing that I still can't Format as Extended Storage. Code CE-41899-1 pops up: 'Cannot format this USB storage device as extended storage. A USB storage device that meets the following conditions must be used.

(CE-41899-1). USB 3.0 or later. 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum capaciity.
Directly connected to the PS4' All conditions are met and the external drive was just opened out of the box. Not understanding why this is happening if the disk is being seen by the PS4 and is telling me its formatted to exFAT and I can use this to backup all data on it as well.
